Can I Self-Study for the Math Portion?

Of course you can! There is a lot of content that needs to be learned (or re-learned) for the math section of any standardized test, and you will need to be studying a lot on your own regardless of if you use a tutor for the math portion of any test. When we work with you on the math section, we aim to help you study as much on your own as you're willing, while we guide you in a way that keeps you moving forward and addresses the test (not just the content).

So when is it useful to use a tutor and not only self-study?

  1. You're struggling with timing.

  2. You feel like your approach for some of the questions is too difficult or time consuming.

  3. You're too tired for the next section (you used up all your brainpower taking the math section).

  4. You don't know how to spend your time studying between the various content groups.

  5. You get questions wrong in the timed section that you easily fix afterwards, i.e. lots of “silly” mistakes.

  6. You keep hearing the same mantras from people you ask for help, like “slow down” or “write every step out,” and they either don't seem to be helping or you don't have enough time to do them for every question.

  7. You get stuck for too long on a handful of questions that then make you rush the rest of the section.

  8. You know you can get all (or close to all) of the questions correct, but you're not able to during timed/test-day conditions.

Let your tutor know if you feel like you have any of these issues and want to work on them. All of our tutors use proven approaches and drills to help you overcome these obstacles in your math sections, in addition to helping with content gaps.
