Recommended Summer Reads

Summer reading tends to be something dreaded as opposed to celebrated. We’ve compiled a list of recommended books from our tutors - some fun reads and some challenging ones - that will intrigue you as much as they will maintain your reading comprehension skills!

If you’re interested in a classic read, try:

To Have and Have Not by Ernest Hemingway

1984 by George Orwell

The Beautiful and The Damned by F. Scott Fitzerald

If you’re interested in a fun read, try:

The The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein

Enzo, a racecar driver’s dog, narrates the novel. He believes dogs that live up to their potential will be reincarnated as humans in their next life, and he plays a huge role in the lives of his owners. This is a light and feel-good read.

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

Though her life is, by first glance, glaring mundane, Eleanor Oliphant operates with an obvious level of social awkwardness. Though a young woman in her late twenties, her past is marred by an event not directly discussed. This is a great read for someone who likes suspense and a twisting plotline.

Elantris by Brandon Sanderson

Elantris, once a place of magic, has now been cursed and has had its magic destroyed. Three protagonists, whose stories intertwine, navigate this new world. A great read for lovers of fantasy and readers looking for a new series.

If you’re interested in non-fiction, try:

The Price We Pay by Dr. Marty Makary

A look into the American healthcare system, focused on the financial aspect of the healthcare industry in the United States.

Death by Black Hole: And Other Cosmic Quandaries by Neil deGrasse Tyson
