PSAT Preparation
How exactly does one prepare for the PSAT?
The PSAT is, in general, a slightly shorter and easier version of the SAT. To prepare, it is important to use official material and practice tests. Because difficulty varies from test to test, it is most useful to practice with multiple instances to account for either possibility you may face on test day. Practicing with a practice SAT test will over-prepare you for the level of difficulty of the PSAT, and practicing with a practice PSAT test can act as a placement check for how well you will perform under the appropriate time pressure. Additionally, NMSC equally weights each of the three PSAT sections - Reading, Writing, and Math - so we suggest spending more time studying for the Writing section than you would if you were planning to take the SAT only.
Why does it matter?
Most of what you hear about the PSAT is that it is only a practice-run for the official SAT, but most don’t mention that it can count for much more than practice. The PSAT scores will go to your high school as well as your state (in most cases), and high scores result in being identified in the National Merit Scholar Program. In addition to qualifying for national scholarships from the NMSC, individual colleges may offer additional scholarships for academic excellence.
